General Manager

My hometown:

The Hague, The Netherlands

An interesting fact:

I started in the hospitality industry when I was 15, waiting tables part-time. I always wanted to become a General Manager of a hotel.

I never travel without:

Running shoes, Cazal 901 sunglasses and my favourite pen

Things I love to do:

Running long distances in the early morning and witnessing beautiful sunrises; playing football on a clear spring day in Holland with crisp clean air blowing over the field; travelling to destinations unknown and interacting with different people and cultures and surrounding myself with all the wonders the destination has to offer.

My best travel memory:

There are two. The first, waking up before dawn to see the sunrise over majestic Angkor Wat, just sitting back and taking it all in. The second, travelling to Queenstown, New Zealand and flying over the Milford Sound and climbing to the summit of Ben Lomond, simply spectacular, a truly wonderful country!

My favourite Khmer food:

I will try practically anything, but I prefer something with meat, except chicken. I had some excellent beef lok lak in Siem Reap.

Things I love about Park Hyatt Siem Reap:

A truly stunning property. I love its look and feel and the art deco with colonial touches. Its location is second to none, right in the center of the vibrant town and still within 10 minutes of the Angkor temple complex, which is a must-see during visits to Siem Reap.

A day in the life of Herman:

I always say that I have the best job in the world. No day is ever the same. I meet new people on a daily basis, each with their own interests, quirks and passions. My daily routine always starts with saying good morning to my wife, followed by a glass of water, a cup of coffee and me reading the daily minutes over breakfast. This is when my routine ends and the true experience of working in the hospitality industry begins where I immerse myself in making guests happy and running a magical property together with my team.

What is your favorite cultural place to walk to from the hotel?
My favourite sites to visit within walking distance from the hotel are the traditional Cambodian artisan workshop, Artisan D’Angkor and the popular night markets.

You have $15 to spend on lunch, where would you eat? If you had $500?
If I want to have lunch for $15.00, I prefer to go to the fresh open air noodle and rice shops within the Angkor Archaeological park and in front of Angkor Wat.  If I had $500.00 to spend,  I would organize a special picnic to be enjoyed by my friends and family in the countryside.

What have guests been asking about lately?  What kind of experiences are they looking for?
Our guests are often looking for unique restaurants and entertainment for the evenings. We are lucky here in Siem Reap as there are many eclectic restaurants and new boutique shops to choose from.

If you could learn to create one dish at the hotel’s restaurant, what would it be?
I would like to learn how to create our Chef’s traditional Seafood Amok. Amok is the traditional dish of Cambodia and although I am familiar with how to make this dish, I wouldn’t mind some tips from our Cambodian cuisine expert.

What is your favorite piece of artwork in the hotel?
Each hotel hallway at Park Hyatt Siem Reap is lined with beautiful black and white photography of the temples and Cambodian culture, I like these photos as well as the paintings by local Cambodian artist, Lim Muy Theam. A refugee from the war, he escaped to France to master his trade and is now back in Cambodia to help reinvigorate the traditional Cambodian artisans.

Is there an interesting fact about the hotel that many people don’t know?
Many people are not aware that the hotel building has been in existence since before the war. It was called the Hotel De La Paix all the way through 2012.

Can you tell us about a rare and unique experience you have curated for your guests?
A special monk blessing was curated for a private event here at Park Hyatt Siem Reap. We invited the monks from a local pagoda to come and do a special blessing in our courtyard for the guests. Sitting under the giant Banyan tree and chanting the Buddhist blessings, our guests were able to take time to pay respects to the monks and receive a blessing for good health and happiness. It is a great experience for guests to understand the religion and culture of Cambodia.

Is there one other Park Hyatt hotel or resort in particular that you love or are dying to visit?
In particular, I would love to visit the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin in Thailand
